Odisha to make rooftop solar panels mandatory for new buildings

Odisha government has decided to make rooftop solar panels mandatory for new building plan approval in a bid to meet electricity consumption in the Smart City Bhubaneswar.

According to reports the decision was taken at the first Executive Council meeting of Odisha State Council on Science and Technology.

Science & Technology Secretary Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma said that the installation of solar panels should be mandatory for building plan approval.

An appropriate scheme for solar generation in building will be formulated for providing an initial subsidy of Rs 10,000 per KW for the promotion of solar rooftops throughout the State.

Reports states that before implementing the move, the State Government will make the Secretariat an energy efficient building and government may soon conduct a study for mapping rooftops in Bhubaneswar for assessing optimum alignment of solar panels in residences by engaging reputed agencies.

The State Government has already launched a subsidy of 30 per cent on the total investment for installation of roof top solar project to encourage rooftop solar energy project.
