China’s President Xi Jinping pledges carbon neutrality before 2060

Speaking to UN General Assembly via a video President Xi Jinping announced that China will scale up its Paris Agreement climate target and “aims to have CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.”

China is the world’s biggest producer of greenhouse gases, the announcement to cut its carbon dioxide emissions to nearly zero by 2060, comes as surprise move announced at the Assembly in New York.

The president said “The human race cannot ignore the warnings of nature over and over again,”

He added that the “2015 Paris climate agreement was the “minimum” that was needed to protect the earth.”

President’s new target will require a radical reshaping of the world’s second-largest economy, and could push coal demand in China close to zero.
