Top electric vehicles in India to lookout for this year

Electric vehicle (EV) market in India has already started gaining momentum, and its really growing hot after Tesla’s announcement of entering the market. There has been a surge in EV sales lately with the improving EV infrastructure and consumers’ conscious, environment-friendly choice. Both domestic and International automakers are betting big on the segment.

Last year may have been sluggish for automakers but it still witnessed slew of launches from MG ZS EV to Tata Nexon EV, and this year holds a lot of promise. There have been no announcements about launch date, however, several companies have hinted that they will launch their EVs in the country this year.

From Tesla, Tata to Mahindra and Maruti —top players are all set to raise the competition by launching new models with supreme specifications.

Here we bring you quick look at the top electric vehicles to look out for in 2021:

Tesla Model 3

Tesla is all set to enter the Indian market in early 2021. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari speaking to Indian Expresss confirmed Tesla’s plan to “start operations” in India in early 2021.

The company will first start its operations in the country with sales only said Gadkari. After looking into the response to its electric car from the buyers the company will consider establishing any assembly and manufacturing plants, he added.

Early this year in October reacting to a tweet by Tesla Club India the CEO of the company Elon Musk suggested that the company will come to India in 2021, he wrote “Next year for sure.”

According to Economics Times the sales will happen only in the second half of the year. The Model 3 sedan is expected to be priced at about INR 55-60 lakh.

Tata Altroz E-V

India’s biggest automaker Tata Motors is all set to launch fully-electric premium hatchback Tata Altroz EV soon in the Indian market.

When launched Tata Altroz EV will be third after fully-electric versions of two of its ICE products Tigor and Nexon.

The fully-electric premium hatchback was introduced in India at the 2020 Auto Expo. However, Tata did not reveal the technical details of the car.

The Altroz EV from the house of Tata will reportedly become the second car to be based on company’s Ziptron electric technology after the Nexon EV. The Tata Altroz EV is expected to carry price tag of INR 12-15 lakh.

Mahindra eKUV 100

Mahindra is expected to launch eKUV 100 sometime in Q1 of this year. The company showcased the car at the Auto Expo 2020 and is expected to be priced around INR 8.25 lakh.

The all new car from the house of Mahindra will pack a 15.9kWh battery pack that supports a fast-charging option and can juice up the battery by up to 80% in just one hour. According to reports it will offer a range of 147km with this battery pack.

Audi e-tron

The all-electric car from the house of Audie, Audi e-tron is also expected to hit the Indian market sometime this year.

The head of the company’s Indian subsidiary Balbir Singh Dhillon told the media earlier.

The car will come with a 95kWh battery pack capable of going over 400km+ range in a single charge and is expected to be priced at a premium rate of INR1.50 crore.

Mahindra XUV 300 Electric

The homegrown automaker Mahindra is also gearing up to launch Mahindra XUV 300 Electric this year. The car is expected to be priced at INR 18 lakh. According to the company the driving range will be upwards of 370 km in one full charge, however, there is no word on the battery pack.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV

Rumor mill around Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV seems to finally settle this year as the company is expected to unleash the much awaited sometime in September.  As per the reports the car can offer a driving range of up to 200kms in one charge and with fast charging option, the car will be capable of charging up to 80% in just 40 minutes.

The company has indicated that the electric version of the WagonR could cost upwards of INR 9 lakh in India.

Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar is expected it launch its first electric SUV Jaguar I-Pace in March this year. Jaguar I-Pace comes with a 50kW DC charger and houses a 90kWh battery pack that can be juiced for a range of around 270km in just an hour.

It is expected to be priced at around INR 1 crore.

 JLR has already partnered with Tata Power to set up a primary network of fast chargers for its buyers.
