Global Wind Energy Council Elects Girish Tanti as Vice-Chair at Annual Board Meeting

Suzlon Group’s Vice Chairman to Lead Global Wind Energy Council

In a significant development for the global renewable energy sector, Girish Tanti, Vice Chairman of the Suzlon Group, has been elected as the Vice-Chair of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) during the organization’s annual board meeting in Abu Dhabi.

Tanti brings with him nearly three decades of experience in the renewables business, having worked extensively across Europe, the USA, and Asia. As one of the co-founders of Suzlon, he played a pivotal role in establishing and expanding the company’s presence across multiple continents, including India, the USA, Canada, Europe, China, Australia, South America, and South Africa.

Expressing his enthusiasm for his new role, Tanti emphasized the critical importance of transitioning to a net-zero world, stating, “It is an extremely critical time for the world as our collective future depends on a rapid transition to a net-zero world.”

In addition to his leadership at Suzlon, Tanti has been actively involved in driving policy reform as a member of various prestigious semi-governmental and private organizations. He remains committed to facilitating the global energy transition journey.

Reflecting on his election as Vice-Chair, Tanti expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by the board and reaffirmed his dedication to advancing the agenda of tripling renewable energy to meet global energy transition goals.

Tanti underscored the urgent need for decisive collective action to combat climate change, stating, “As the world stands at the brink of total climate catastrophe, renewables are a non-negotiable and the only viable weapon to combat it.”

In his new capacity, Tanti aims to uphold the legacy of Suzlon’s late Founder, Mr. Tulsi Tanti, and further the company’s vision for renewable energy. He looks forward to collaborating closely with GWEC Chair Jonathan Cole, CEO Ben Backwell, and other industry members to realize the shared vision of a sustainable energy future.

GWEC CEO Ben Backwell expressed delight at Tanti’s appointment, noting Suzlon’s status as true wind pioneers and the invaluable experience they bring to GWEC. He emphasized the importance of international collaboration between industry and policymakers in achieving the rapid deployment of wind energy, a goal crucial to the tripling target agreed at COP28.
