Union science, technology and environment minister Harsh Vardhan reportedly appealed all state governments to frame a proactive policy on solar energy in a bid to spread it to wider section of the population.
According to The Telegraph the Minister on the sidelines of an international meeting on solar innovation in Calcutta, organised by the science and technology ministry, IIT Kharagpur, NB Institute of Rural Technology and others, on Saturday said “The state governments, including that of West Bengal, have to adopt a proactive policy on rooftop solar and others to ensure more people get the advantage.”
He added “I personally did not talk to the Bengal government on the issue but my senior officials have been discussing the matter with them.”
It was earlier reported citing warning by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry and credit rating agency Care Ratings that the “implementation of rooftop solar is taking place at a much slower pace and it seems unlikely that the government would achieve its 40GW target (rooftop solar) by 2022”.
The minister, however, expressed his confidence stating that 100 gigawatt of solar power target will be achieved by 2022.
