Bajaj Auto is reportedly planning to roll out its electric vehicles in the financial year 2019-2020. A senior official speaking to ET said that the development will take place across segments.
Speaking to the publication Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto said “We are developing prototypes across the bay, however what will come out first is a question we will be addressing shortly. But it should happen this year.”
The company recent announced that it has agreed to develop a common 48 volt electric two-wheeler platform in the power range 3 to 10 kW for planned serial production in India.
The platform is expected to support different product variants – scooters, mopeds, small mopeds, under brands of both partners.
According to the report the serial production will start at Bajaj’s production site in Pune by 2022. The necessary development budget is covered in the medium-term plans.
Bajaj’s official said “We are quite keen on electric. It is an important development for the future and to prepare and learn from this development as it unfolds.”
This may benefit the company as government is expected to mandate the sale of only electric two and three wheelers in coming three to five years.
