Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Introduces Fleet of Electric Vehicles for Runway Duty

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has taken a step towards reducing its carbon footprint by introducing a fleet of electric vehicles on its runway. A total of 45 internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles have been replaced with electric vehicles, including a mix of Tata Nexon and Tigor EVs, MG ZS EVs, and Hyundai Kona EVs.

The airport’s official page announced this move on social media, stating that it is part of their commitment to achieve operational Net-Zero emission. The airport plans to deploy around 60 electric vehicles by 2024, which will help in reducing around 25% of its scope 01 Green House Gas emissions.

A spokesperson from CSMIA also mentioned that the airport has pledged to reduce its carbon footprint and encourage environmentally friendly transportation, which includes this initiative. As part of its Operational Net Zero aim, CSMIA wants to transition all of its combustion-powered vehicles to electricity by 2029. This move has recently earned the airport the “Best Sustainable Airport of the Year” award by the 14th International ASSOCHAM Conference & Awards for Civil Aviation by the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).
