Nikola Corporation has begun constructing hydrogen plants and securing agreements with hydrogen producers to supply fuel for its vehicles in parts of the U.S. and Canada.
The company plans to have enough fuel for about 7,500 heavy-duty trucks by 2026.
Nikola’s infrastructure for hydrogen fuel-cell electric trucks is critical to its strategy to begin assembling the vehicles for the market later this year.
The company has started constructing a plant in Buckeye to extract hydrogen from water and is negotiating an investment agreement with Fortescue Future Industries for the plant. Nikola’s hydrogen fuel network is one of its biggest challenges as it prepares to compete with battery-electric truck rivals.
The company has orders for about 1,000 hydrogen trucks, with 800 going to Anheuser-Busch InBev NV.
