Ministers, government representatives, thought leaders, and international organization chiefs from around the world will gather in New Delhi for the 22nd edition of the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) from February 22-24, 2023. The three-day Summit, hosted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), will focus on the critical theme of ‘Mainstreaming Sustainable Development and Climate Resilience for Collective Action’.
The WSDS comes at a time when the world is grappling with the impact of climate change and struggling to find effective frameworks and strategies to cope with it. The Summit will bring together stakeholders from across the planet to deliberate on critical themes such as G20 leadership and green development pact, equity and climate justice, driving and financing sustainable development, inclusive green growth, energy transitions, and LiFE.
Several notable speakers will participate in the Summit, including Mr Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, who will deliver the multilateral leadership address on ‘equity and climate justice.’ Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, Vice President of the Republic of Guyana, is set to deliver the global leadership address.
Mr Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), will be part of the inaugural session. The event will also see the participation of other environment ministers from India, Sri Lanka, Canada, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Japan, and Finland, who are expected to take part in multiple plenary sessions.
The WSDS is TERI’s annual flagship multistakeholder event and is the only independently convened event of such scale in the Global South that brings together world leaders, thinkers, scientists, industry, and government representatives to work towards long-term solutions for the planet’s health. This year’s summit will take place at the India Habitat Centre and will anchor deliberations on the critical themes of G20 leadership and green development pact, equity and climate justice, driving and financing sustainable development, inclusive green growth, energy transitions, and LiFE. With India holding the G20 Presidency and the critical Global Stocktake set to conclude at COP28 later this year, the WSDS is expected to be a crucial event in shaping the discourse around sustainable development and climate resilience.
