The mobile application promotes mindful utilization and sustainable actions for a greener future
In a bid to galvanize youth action and raise awareness about climate change, Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, unveiled the “Meri LiFE” (My Life) mobile application. Inspired by the concept of LiFE envisioned by the Prime Minister at COP 26, the app aims to encourage mindful and deliberate utilization over mindless and wasteful consumption.
During the launch event, Minister Yadav highlighted the app’s potential to showcase the power of citizens, especially young people, in protecting and preserving the environment.
By integrating simple climate-friendly actions into daily lives, the app empowers individuals to make a significant impact on the planet. The Minister expressed his hope that the Meri LiFE app would spark a national movement for LiFE, promoting sustainable living and driving positive change.
Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), introduced by the Prime Minister on October 20, 2022, in Kevadia, Gujarat, focuses on instilling behavioral changes in individuals through easily achievable actions.
Serving as the nodal ministry for the nationwide coordination and implementation of Mission LiFE, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has engaged Central Ministries, State Governments, Institutions, and private organizations to align their activities with LiFE and raise awareness about sustainable practices.
To further amplify advocacy and awareness for LiFE across India, a month-long mass mobilization drive is currently underway, culminating in a grand celebration on June 5, 2023, to mark World Environment Day.
The Ministry has developed two dedicated portals for LiFE: the Mission LiFE Portal (missionlife-moefcc.nic.in) and the Meri LiFE Portal (merilife.org). The Mission LiFE Portal offers open access to download over 100 creatives, videos, and knowledge materials developed by the ministry. Meanwhile, the Meri LiFE Portal serves as a platform for ministries and institutions to submit event reports and monitor the progress of the mass mobilization drive.
Within a span of 10 days, India has witnessed over 100,000 LiFE-related events, engaging more than 1.7 million individuals in pro-planet actions.
These events range from cleanliness drives and bicycle rallies to plantation campaigns, LiFE marathons, plastic collection initiatives, composting workshops, and the undertaking of LiFE pledges.
Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, are actively participating by organizing cultural competitions such as street plays, essays, paintings, and youth parliaments.
The launch of the Meri LiFE App was attended by esteemed guests, including Ms. Leena Nandan, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change; C.P. Goyal, Director General of Forest and Special Secretary; and Dhuwarakha Sriram, Chief of GenU, Youth Development, and Partnerships, UNICEF India.
The Meri LiFE app offers a structured approach to monitor the progress of Mission LiFE. Upon registration, users will be guided to participate in various LiFE-related tasks under five core themes: Save Energy, Save Water, Reduce Single Use Plastic, Adopt Sustainable Food Systems, and Adopt Healthy Lifestyle.
Through gamification, the app encourages individuals to take the 5 for 5 challenge, completing five LiFE Actions leading up to June 5th. The app is available for download on the Google Play Store.
The grand finale of the mass mobilization campaign will coincide with World Environment Day 2023 on June 5th. This year’s theme,
