Collaborative Project Led by Blue Planet’s Zigma Aims for 100% Waste Segregation by 2030
In a significant move for environmental restoration, the Greater Chennai Corporation has approved a groundbreaking project to bio-mine the decades-old Kodungaiyur dumpyard. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by three reputable firms, marks a major step towards reclaiming years of accumulated waste and restoring ecological balance in North Chennai.
The sprawling 352-acre Kodungaiyur dumpyard houses a staggering 66 lakh cubic meters of garbage, posing a severe threat to the environment and public health of surrounding communities. This project promises a comprehensive bio-mining solution aimed at alleviating the long-standing environmental burden borne by the region’s residents.
Leading the charge is Blue Planet’s Zigma Global Environ Solutions Pvt Ltd, a company with a proven track record in waste management. Having successfully tackled reclamation efforts at the Perungudi dump yard in South Chennai, Zigma has been awarded 50% of the Kodungaiyur contract. Their expertise is poised to make a significant contribution to bio-mining a substantial portion of the site.
The project acknowledges the ongoing challenge of fresh waste accumulation, with Kodungaiyur receiving nearly 3,000 tonnes daily. To combat this, the corporation aims for ambitious 100% waste segregation by 2030.
Funding for this crucial initiative reflects a collaborative spirit, with contributions coming from the Union Government, the State Government, the Greater Chennai Corporation, and KfW German Bank. This unified approach underscores the project’s importance in addressing pressing environmental issues.
Beyond its core objective of reclamation, Blue Planet’s Zigma Global Environ Solutions boasts a remarkable record in waste management and sustainability. As India’s largest landfill mining company, Zigma has processed over 13 million tons of legacy waste, reclaimed over 25 dumpsites, and restored over 600 acres of land. These achievements align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and involve implementing 24/7 real-time monitoring for waste disposal tracking.
Furthermore, Zigma plays a vital role as India’s leading supplier of alternative fuel. The company has provided more than 1.5 million tons of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) – a substitute for fossil fuels like coal used in cement production. This significantly reduces CO2 emissions and promotes the utilization of sustainable alternatives in cement kilns and Waste-to-Energy plants.
