CSMIA’s innovative eco-initiative enhances aesthetics and sustainability efforts.
In a bold step towards sustainability, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has revealed an innovative addition to its infrastructure: a striking Vertical Green Wall. This eco-friendly initiative underscores CSMIA’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while enhancing passenger experiences.
Spanning approximately 1,000 square meters across Terminal 1, Terminal 2, General Aviation Terminal, and the ceremonial lounge, these lush green walls serve both aesthetic and environmental purposes.
Key highlights of the project include:
Integrated Sustainability: Equipped with advanced drainage and drip irrigation systems, the green walls ensure efficient water usage, cutting consumption by over 50% compared to conventional methods.
Innovative Design: Featuring a diverse array of over 30 plant varieties and more than 35,000 plants, the green walls utilize coconut industry waste and neem-based manure for optimal growth. The modular design allows for easy replacement of pots, facilitating flexible design changes, while wheels enable effortless movement and installation.
Enhanced Passenger Experience: Beyond their visual allure, the green walls contribute to improved air quality and passenger well-being. With changing patterns, shapes, and seasonal plants, they offer a delightful journey experience year-round.
CSMIA’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond its green initiatives. As one of India’s first 100% sustainable airports, CSMIA has earned the highest-level 4+ “Transition” accreditation in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program by the Airport Council International (ACI).
From innovative energy sources like Vertical Axis Wind Turbines & Solar PV systems to eco-friendly transportation options such as Uber Green, CSMIA leads the way in environmental stewardship.
Furthermore, the airport’s commitment to waste management is evident through initiatives like recycling 8,890 plastic bottles and achieving a remarkable 42% water recycling rate in the fiscal year 2023-2024.
CSMIA’s relentless pursuit of sustainability not only solidifies its status as a premier aviation hub but also elevates its infrastructure, showcasing a harmonious blend of technology, innovation, and environmental consciousness.
