MG Motor India Accelerates EV Adoption with 500 Charger Installations in 500 Days

British automaker expands charging network in key cities, furthering its commitment to a sustainable future in India.

British automaker MG Motor India, with a century-long legacy, announced a significant milestone in its mission to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India. The company successfully installed 500 EV chargers across the country within a remarkable 500-day timeframe under its MG Charge initiative.

Launched in mid-2022, MG Charge aims to establish a robust and accessible EV charging network by installing 1,000 charging points within 1,000 days. These chargers will be strategically placed in residential complexes like apartments, condominiums, and societies, providing convenient charging options for residents and visitors.

“MG aspires to be more than just an EV provider,” said Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer, MG Motor India. “This landmark achievement of installing 500 chargers in 500 days reflects MG Charge’s vision to create a comprehensive EV ecosystem that fosters the widespread adoption of green mobility. We’re committed to delivering not just chargers, but convenient and accessible solutions that enhance the entire EV ownership experience, paving the way for a sustainable future.”

MG Motor India collaborated with key partners like Exicom Telesystems, ElectreeFi, EchargerBays, Ionage, Statiq, and Highway Delite to strategically deploy 7.4kW chargers. This rapid installation rate, averaging one charger per day, has covered approximately 50 major cities in India. This achievement underscores the carmaker’s unwavering commitment to accelerating the shift towards green mobility by establishing a strong EV infrastructure within the country.

MG’s Broader Commitment to EVs

MG Motor India has emerged as a frontrunner in building a robust EV charging network, contributing to a nationwide network of over 15,000 charging points, encompassing both public and home chargers. The company actively collaborates with partners like Glida, TPCL, BPCL, Jio-bp, Statiq, Zeon, and ChargeZone for further infrastructure development. Additionally, MG has partnered with Attero and Lohum for battery recycling, reuse, and life extension. Notably, their recent collaboration with the Shoonya – Zero Pollution Mobility campaign, spearheaded by NITI Aayog, further emphasizes MG Motor India’s dedication to promoting electric vehicles.

MG Motor India takes a holistic approach to sustainability. Skilling and upskilling initiatives are implemented to bridge the talent gap in the evolving electric mobility landscape. The company prioritizes green manufacturing practices, with 50% of its manufacturing energy sourced from renewable sources. This commitment to sustainability has resulted in a 36% reduction in CO2 emissions, with projections estimating a reduction of 11,889 MT by the end of 2024.

MG Motor India has solidified its position as the second-largest EV seller in India. The company has sold over 25,000 units of its electric vehicle models, the ZS and Comet, which currently account for 25-30% of the company’s total sales. This significant achievement highlights the growing consumer demand for electric vehicles in India, and MG Motor India is well-positioned to be a leader in this transformative shift towards a cleaner transportation future.
