Intensive program equips participants with geophysical tools and techniques for resource assessment
A two-day workshop on “Groundwater Resource Assessment using Geophysical Tools and Techniques” concluded successfully at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) on April 26th.
Organized by the Department of Hydrology in collaboration with Guideline Geo and Pan-India Consultant Pvt. Ltd., the workshop attracted immense interest with over 300 applications received. A select group of 129 participants, including professionals, researchers, and academicians from India and abroad, participated in the intensive program.
The workshop aimed to equip participants with the latest knowledge and practical skills in using geophysical techniques for groundwater resource assessment.
Focus on Sustainable Management
“This workshop provided a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and promoting sustainable groundwater management practices,” said Prof. Brijesh Kumar Yadav, Chairman of the workshop, highlighting the program’s significance in addressing the critical issue of groundwater depletion.
Renowned Speakers Share Expertise
The event featured lectures by eminent speakers like Ms. Morgan Sander (ABEM-USA), Prof. Elango Lakshmanan (IIT Madras), and Mr. Vivek Bansal (Pan-India Consultants Pvt Ltd). Sessions covered a wide range of topics, from Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Time Domain Electromagnetic (TEM) surveys to groundwater governance and management in coastal areas.
Hands-on Learning and Fieldwork
Participants gained valuable hands-on experience through field studies conducted at LBS Ground. Guided by experts, they acquired real-world data using ERT/TEM systems. This data will be processed and analyzed to create visualizations of hydrogeological strata, a crucial step for informed decision-making in groundwater management.
Advanced Techniques and Industry Collaboration
Day two delved into advanced topics like machine learning applications in groundwater management and advancements in monitoring technologies. Experts like Prof. Mayur Pal (Kaunas University of Technology) and Dr. Ranjan Sinha (Cairn Oil & Gas) led these sessions.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and industry in tackling environmental challenges. Participation by professionals from Pan-India Consultant Pvt. Ltd. provided insights into “Make in India” efforts and the role of technology in sustainable groundwater management.
IIT Roorkee’s Commitment to Sustainability
“The success of this workshop reaffirms IIT Roorkee’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and equipping professionals with the necessary skills to address pressing environmental challenges,” said Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee.
This workshop on groundwater resource assessment serves as a significant step towards ensuring the sustainable management of this vital resource.
