JK Tyre’s Chennai Plant Paves the Way for Sustainable Tire Manufacturing in India

Company Earns Prestigious ISCC Plus Certification for Environmentally Conscious Practices

JK Tyre & Industries, a major Indian tire manufacturer, has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts by becoming the first tire company in the country to receive the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus for its Chennai plant.

The ISCC Plus certification signifies JK Tyre’s commitment to integrating environmentally conscious practices throughout its manufacturing processes. Earning this certification requires meeting stringent criteria that encompass traceability of raw materials, adherence to environmental regulations, ecosystem preservation, upholding labor and human rights, and promoting sustainable economic development.

“Green manufacturing embodies our commitment to sustainable development,” said Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of JK Tyre. “By reducing our carbon footprint and utilizing resources judiciously, we have consistently set industry standards over the years. This recognition is a significant milestone for JK Tyre and motivates us to continue our dedication to sustainable practices.”

JK Tyre has set ambitious goals for the future, aiming to become a carbon-neutral brand by 2050 and achieving a 50% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030. The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has validated the company’s commitment to lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

The Chennai plant’s achievement adds to its impressive record of sustainability accolades. In 2021, it earned zero-liquid discharge facility certification. It has also received recognition for its energy efficiency, being named “National Energy Leader” at the 21st National Award for Excellence in Energy Management and receiving the “Excellent Energy Efficient Unit” award from CII for six consecutive years since 2015.

The ISCC Plus certification is a voluntary scheme that focuses on bio-based and circular (recycled) raw materials. The certification process involves a rigorous verification to ensure compliance with ISCC requirements, including tracing certified materials throughout the entire supply chain, from source to finished product.

JK Tyre’s achievement in securing the ISCC Plus certification for its Chennai plant demonstrates the company’s leadership in sustainable manufacturing practices within the Indian tire industry.
