Singal’s Miyawaki Forest Initiative Aims to Restore Ecological Balance and Create Greener Future
In a bold move inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, Jagdish Rai Singal, the founder and chairman of the Eastman Group, has embarked on a transformative project to convert a landfill site in Ludhiana into a lush Miyawaki forest.
Partnering with the Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana, Singal’s initiative aims to rejuvenate two acres of barren land in the Focal Point Industrial Area at a total cost of INR 1 crore. The project, to be executed in two phases, is a testament to the power of public-private partnerships in addressing urban environmental challenges.
The selected site, spanning over 5500 square yards, was once a landfill. Recognizing the urgent need for land restoration, Singal has allocated INR 30 lakhs to the initial phase, which involves extensive cleaning to improve soil fertility. This groundwork will pave the way for subsequent stages, including land clearing, tree planting, and long-term sustainability measures.
Sandeep Rishi, Municipal Corporation Commissioner of Ludhiana, lauded Singal’s efforts, stating, “This project is a shining example of how public-private partnerships can drive positive change. By converting a former landfill into a vibrant Miyawaki Forest, we are not only addressing pollution but also setting a new standard for urban sustainability.”
Singal expressed his commitment to environmental sustainability, saying, “This project is about transforming barren land into a thriving green space that benefits the community and restores ecological balance. We hope it inspires more industry players to contribute to urban sustainability.”
The Miyawaki forest, a method of creating dense, urban forests, is known for its rapid growth and ecological benefits. Singal’s initiative is not only about combating pollution but also about providing a greener and healthier environment for future generations.
Lokesh Jain, Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), praised Singal’s efforts, stating, “This project aligns with our ‘Lungs of Ludhiana’ initiative, which aims to make Ludhiana the greenest city in Asia.”
Singal’s dedication to this cause highlights a significant step toward addressing current environmental challenges and reviving ecological balance in urban settings. The project is expected to create a lasting impact, contributing to cleaner air, improved soil health, and an enhanced quality of life for residents of Ludhiana.
