ePlane Opens India’s Largest eVTOL Manufacturing Hub at IIT Madras Discovery Campus

60,000 sq. ft. integrated hub in Chennai to drive serial production of the compact e200X air taxi, with initial focus on air ambulance deployment and DGCA-led certification.

The ePlane Company (Ubifly Technologies Pvt. Ltd.) has inaugurated India’s largest integrated electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) manufacturing and testing facility at the IIT Madras Discovery Campus in Thaiyur, marking a major milestone in the country’s urban air mobility ambitions.

Spread across 60,000 sq. ft., the new facility signals India’s shift from lab-scale prototypes to industrial serial production of electric aircraft. The plant will house design, integration, composite fabrication, electric powertrain assembly, avionics testing and a dedicated Ground Test Vehicle (GTV) unit as the company advances toward Type Certification in coordination with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The company’s flagship air taxi, the e200X, is positioned as the world’s most compact eVTOL, featuring a patented 8m x 10m footprint and proprietary Synergistic Lift technology that improves energy efficiency by 35%—a key advantage for operations in dense urban environments. Unlike many global competitors that require larger landing pads, the e200X is designed for rooftop-to-rooftop mobility in congested cities.

The facility was inaugurated by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, underscoring the institute’s push to build a deep-tech ecosystem capable of designing, certifying and manufacturing complex aerospace hardware domestically.

As part of its commercial strategy, ePlane plans to initially deploy its aircraft as air ambulances, aiming to reduce critical medical transport times across India by up to seven times. The company is also working closely with regulators to help shape India’s certification and flight-testing framework for electric aviation.

With this launch, India takes a significant step toward building an indigenous, zero-emission urban air mobility industry anchored in advanced engineering, regulatory collaboration and large-scale aerospace manufacturing.
