National carrier charts ambitious course to net-zero emissions by 2030
In a monumental stride towards environmental sustainability, Indian Railways has unleashed a green revolution, dramatically amplifying its renewable energy capacity and electrifying vast stretches of its rail network. As of October 2023, the national carrier has commissioned a staggering 211 MW of solar plants and 103 MW of wind power projects, signaling a decisive shift towards greener pastures.
“This surge in renewable energy capacity is a cornerstone of India’s broader climate ambitions,” declared the Ministry of Railways. “We are resolutely committed to transitioning to sustainable energy sources and reducing our carbon footprint.”
But the green locomotive doesn’t stop there. With an additional 2,150 MW of renewable energy capacity already secured, Indian Railways is gearing up for an energy metamorphosis. This ambitious move reinforces the railways’ unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship.
Electrification is another feather in the cap of the green brigade. As of November 2023, a whopping 60,814 km of the Broad Gauge network has been electrified, a far cry from the 21,801 km electrified in 2014. This remarkable surge, spanning fourteen states and Union Territories, has witnessed regions like Chandigarh, Delhi, and Puducherry achieving 100% electrification.
The vision of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030 burns bright for Indian Railways. To propel this mission, the railway has embraced a bouquet of green initiatives. From deploying energy-efficient three-phase electric locomotives with regenerative brakes to implementing Head on Generation (HOG) technology and illuminating stations and coaches with LED lights, the green revolution is rolling on every track.
This transformative push towards sustainable energy and electrification paints a bright picture for Indian Railways. Not only is it paving the way for a cleaner future, but it’s also setting a powerful precedent for other transportation giants to follow.
