Discussion Paper Highlights Need for Integrated Approach
A comprehensive discussion paper titled “Climate Resilience in Water Resource Management in India: A Conceptual Framework for Action” was unveiled at the 8th India Water Week 2024.
The paper, authored by Ms Neha Lakhwan, Dr Girija Bharat, and Dr SK Sarkar, highlighted the urgent need for India to adopt integrated water resource management (IWRM) to address the increasing variability of water resources due to climate change.
Speaking at the thematic session on “Demand Management and Water Use Efficiency,” Ms Lakhwan emphasized the importance of data-driven interventions and participatory governance at the local level.
Dr Bharat called for a National Climate Change Act to provide a legal framework for addressing climate change impacts and defining clear roles and responsibilities for stakeholders in the water sector.
Dr Sarkar warned of the severe consequences of climate change on India’s water resources, including erratic monsoons, droughts, and cyclones.
The discussion paper underscores the critical need for India to invest in advanced technologies, strengthen institutional frameworks, and promote cross-sector collaboration to ensure water security in a climate-vulnerable future.
The insights presented at the India Water Week 2024 serve as a vital roadmap for shaping resilient water management practices in India.
