The food delivery giant partners with eco-conscious restaurants to reduce plastic usage and promote sustainable packaging solutions.
Zomato, one of India’s leading food delivery platforms, has launched its ‘Plastic-Free Future’ campaign to promote sustainable packaging practices among its restaurant partners. This initiative aims to recognize and celebrate restaurants actively transitioning to eco-friendly packaging solutions, aligning with Zomato’s broader commitment to sustainability.
Under the Plastic-Free Future program, restaurants that adopt sustainable packaging will display a special banner on their menu pages and a prominent callout in the order summary within the Zomato app. This feature makes it easier for customers to identify and support eco-conscious restaurants. Over 200 restaurant brands across 30+ cities have already joined the program by providing detailed evidence, including certifications and photos, of their sustainable packaging materials.
Zomato has been taking multiple steps over the years to reduce the environmental footprint of food deliveries. These include allowing customers to opt out of receiving cutlery and recycling more plastic waste than is generated from packaging used in Zomato orders. Recently, Zomato also organized the Zomato X Start-Up India Packathon, an event that highlighted startups innovating in plastic-free packaging solutions for the food delivery sector.
To further drive change, Zomato is encouraging its vast customer base to order from restaurants that are committed to reducing plastic usage. With over three lakh restaurants spread across 700 cities on its platform, Zomato’s initiative has the potential to significantly accelerate the adoption of sustainable packaging in the food delivery ecosystem.
Rakesh Ranjan, CEO of Food Delivery at Zomato, emphasized the platform’s vision: “Through this campaign, our endeavor is to build a sustainable food delivery ecosystem by celebrating restaurant partners who have committed to reducing plastic usage. At a group level, we remain committed to delivering our promise to shape a future where sustainability is seamlessly woven into everything we do at Zomato.”
Anjalli Ravi Kumar, Chief Sustainability Officer at Zomato, highlighted the importance of this move, stating: “Sustainability is an integral part of Zomato’s DNA. The Plastic-Free Future program is a response to the growing concern over environmental sustainability in the food delivery industry. By recognizing and rewarding eco-conscious brands, we aim to accelerate the adoption of plastic-free packaging alternatives and drive large-scale positive environmental impact.”
With this campaign, Zomato is not only fostering sustainable practices within the food delivery industry but is also empowering consumers to make eco-friendly choices, contributing to a greener future.
