Selvamma, a 75 year old vendor in Bengaluru who has been selling roasted corns for a living for 20 years now , has now switched to solar to prepare this delicacy.
Selvamma has been setting up her stall outside the Vidhana Soudha (State Legislative Assembly) building. Earlier, she would use the traditional method of roasting the corn – a manual cane fan and coal, and fanning the corn until it was grilled. Now, however, her cart boasts of a solar-powered fan.
Selvamma speaking to The News Minute said “My hand hurts, that’s why they have given this.” The recent upgrade has been provided by SELCO Solar Light Pvt Ltd.
Like most other vendors in the country, Selvamma also used hand fan and coal to roast corn, but now things have changed, she now uses Selco’s gifted solar-powered fan, which reduces the manual labour on her .
Now she no longer has to fan the corn until it is roasted, as the solar powered fan does the job for her. The fan works on lithium-ion battery.
With the new equipment Selvamma can now roast her corns in just half the time what she use to on coal. She can also work a bit late in the night with the LED support.
Watch the video below shared by a Twitter user showing Selvamma using the fan to roast corn at her cart:-
Perfect example of technology reaching the last person of the society. 75-year-old Selvamma uses a solar-powered fan to grill corn and a LED tube. Look at the irony, she does it diagonally opp to the seat of power – Vidhan Soudha. Govt couldn't empower her, technology did. pic.twitter.com/deekI58ROi
