Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change presents key findings and engages in discussions at the 58th session of UNFCCC subsidiary bodies
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is gearing up to actively participate in the 58th session of the Subsidiary Bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), widely known as the Bonn Climate Conference. Taking place in Bonn from June 5 to 15, the conference will serve as a platform for discussions on global climate action.
Kicking off the conference, IPCC Chair Hoesung Lee will present the recently released Synthesis Report of the Sixth Assessment Report during a Special Event of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) on the first day. The report, containing crucial findings, will be unveiled at 15:00. Earlier in the day, IPCC Secretary Abdallah Mokssit will address the opening plenary of the 58th Session of SBSTA.
Throughout the conference, the IPCC will focus on conveying the key outcomes of the Synthesis Report and the entire sixth assessment cycle. These efforts will also include active participation in the Global Stocktake Technical Dialogues, which are scheduled from June 6 to 13. The Technical Dialogues serve as a preliminary stage for the first Global Stocktake, set to take place at the Conference of the Parties (COP28) meetings in Dubai this December.
One of the highlights of the conference will be an in-session workshop on common metrics, scheduled for June 7, where the IPCC Chair will provide insights. The workshop aims to disseminate the significant findings on emission metrics from the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report and identify the advantages and limitations of different metrics.
The IPCC’s expertise will also be showcased through the Research Dialogue, commencing on June 8, where experts from all three Working Groups will contribute essential insights.

In addition, the IPCC will host two side events during the conference. On June 6, the IPCC’s Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) will join forces with the UNFCCC Secretariat to introduce the new version of the IPCC Inventory Software. The software, designed to work with the UNFCCC reporting tool, facilitates the reporting of national greenhouse gas inventories. Furthermore, the TFI will utilize a dedicated space to demonstrate and test the new generation of inventory software, providing attendees with an opportunity to learn about the TFI’s activities and the IPCC’s overall work.

On June 9, the IPCC will host a side event focused on the use of scenarios in the Sixth Assessment Report and future assessments. This event will delve into the outcomes and recommendations of a scientific workshop on scenarios held by the IPCC in April.
IPCC experts will actively participate in various other side events and activities throughout the conference, further emphasizing the organization’s commitment to promoting climate action and disseminating vital scientific information.
