Power giant to add 3GW of RE capacity, underpins India’s green push
NTPC Ltd., India’s largest power producer, unveiled an ambitious plan to expand its power generation capacity by 5 gigawatts (GW) in the coming fiscal year, reflecting a growing commitment to clean energy solutions.
The state-owned company, a major contributor to India’s energy needs, will focus on adding 3 GW of renewable energy (RE) capacity, showcasing its dedication to environmental stewardship. This move aligns with India’s national push for cleaner energy sources to combat climate change and air pollution.
While prioritizing renewables, NTPC also plans to add 2 GW of thermal power capacity, bolstering the country’s overall energy infrastructure. In the last financial year (FY24), NTPC successfully added nearly 4 GW of new capacity, bringing its total installed capacity to almost 76 GW.
Presently, the company boasts an operational RE capacity of 3.5 GW and has an impressive pipeline exceeding 20 GW for future projects. By 2032, NTPC aspires to significantly expand its non-fossil fuel portfolio to 45-50% of its total capacity. This ambitious target includes achieving a staggering 60 GW of RE capacity within a total portfolio of 130 GW.
NTPC, a dominant player in India’s power sector, currently fulfills a quarter of the country’s electricity needs. The company’s diverse portfolio encompasses thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power plants, solidifying its commitment to delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable power to the nation. Looking ahead, NTPC remains steadfast in adopting best practices, fostering innovation, and embracing clean energy technologies to illuminate a greener future for India.
