Vivek Sen to Lead CPI’s Efforts in Promoting Sustainable Economic Growth and Climate Finance Solutions in India

The Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) has announced the promotion of Vivek Sen as its new India Director. With extensive experience in clean energy, policy, and finance, Sen is poised to bolster CPI’s mission of fostering sustainable and inclusive economic growth through innovative climate policy and finance solutions.

Sen has played a pivotal role in establishing and expanding CPI programs, such as the Center for Sustainable Finance and initiatives focused on a just transition and low-carbon transition for heavy industry, transportation, and agriculture. His contributions have been critical in shaping India’s climate policy and sustainable finance landscape. Additionally, he has been instrumental in launching initiatives like the India PURE Finance Facility, the India Clean Energy Finance Facility, and the India chapter of the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance, aimed at mobilizing long-term equity and debt financing for sectors facing funding challenges.

With 18 years of experience in policy, energy, and finance, Sen has collaborated extensively with India’s central and state governments, regulators, and financial institutions. His work includes projects with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Power, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and NITI Aayog. He has also partnered with various multilateral and bilateral agencies, philanthropic entities, academic institutions, and civil society organizations dedicated to climate change and sustainable development.

Dr. Barbara Buchner, Global Managing Director of CPI, expressed enthusiasm about Sen’s appointment, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Vivek Sen as our new India Director. His extensive experience and deep understanding of climate finance and policy, both domestically and internationally, as well as his institutional knowledge of CPI, make him the ideal leader to drive our initiatives in India. We are confident that CPI will continue to make significant strides in supporting India’s sustainable development and climate goals under his leadership.”

Before joining CPI, Sen held positions at the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, and Power Exchange India Limited, and served as a Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Limited.

As India intensifies its efforts to combat climate change and achieve its Net Zero Targets by 2070, Sen’s leadership will be crucial in steering CPI’s efforts and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to ensure impactful and lasting outcomes.
