UAE to Host World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi

UAE secures bid for the prestigious international event, showcasing commitment to global conservation efforts

In a remarkable achievement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has won the bid to host the World Conservation Congress of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2025. The announcement was made by the Abu Dhabi Media Office (ADMO), revealing that the bid was submitted by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) on behalf of Abu Dhabi and the UAE government.

The IUCN Congress, a pivotal event in the conservation world, will be held in Abu Dhabi in October 2025 at the prestigious Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). With an estimated attendance of 10,000-15,000 delegates from over 160 countries, the Congress is expected to bring together global leaders, policymakers, scientists, and conservationists to address pressing environmental challenges.

Hiss Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayad Al Nahyan, Chairman of EAD, expressed his delight at winning the bid, highlighting the significance of the event for the UAE and its commitment to conservation. He attributed the success to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, and emphasized that hosting the Congress would provide an exceptional platform to showcase the UAE’s leadership in protecting and restoring endangered species, both domestically and globally.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayad Al Nahyan further stated, “We will make the IUCN 2025 Congress one of the most impactful, effective, and decisive congresses to date. We will work with the conservation community to protect our planet to avert biodiversity and climate crises.”

Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, hailed Abu Dhabi’s selection as the host city for the IUCN World Conservation Congress. She regarded it as a testament to the UAE’s remarkable accomplishments in the field of environmental preservation, particularly during the Year of Sustainability. Almheiri underscored the UAE’s influential position as a global partner in tackling critical challenges such as climate change, environmental preservation, and the prevention of natural resource wastage.

The IUCN Congress serves as a platform for IUCN members to establish the global conservation agenda through voting on motions and guiding the Secretariat’s work through the passage of resolutions and the IUCN Programme. The previous Congress took place in Marseille, France, in September 2021.

The IUCN WCC 2025 in Abu Dhabi promises to be a monumental event, bringing together stakeholders from around the world to galvanize conservation efforts and protect the planet amidst local and global challenges. With the UAE’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the Congress is set to leave a lasting impact on global conservation initiatives.
