TERI’s Dialogue Highlights Crucial Link Between SDGs and Climate Action, Stresses Adaptation Focus
In the wake of the recent ratification of the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration during the G20 Leaders’ Summit and with the eagerly anticipated COP28 in Dubai on the horizon, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) organized a pivotal event on Tuesday. Titled ‘Road to Dubai, from G20 to COP28,’ this event brought together various stakeholders to explore the crucial relationship between Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the pressing need for climate action.
Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, emphasized the need for equal focus on adaptation alongside mitigation and loss and damage as we approach COP28 in Dubai. She highlighted the importance of making “Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE)” a global goal.
Mr. Majid Alnekhailawi, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of UAE, outlined the vision of the COP28 Presidency and stressed the need for energy transitions away from fossil fuels and enhanced climate finance. Prof. Sachin Chaturvedi discussed the existing fragmentation in climate finance mechanisms.
Other notable speakers included experts from various fields, and the event saw the launch of a Policy Brief titled “Road to Dubai and the Global Goal on Adaptation,” which focused on several key messages related to adaptation and climate finance.
The discussions during the event delved into the reliance on fossil fuels, the concept of climate change as a common and differentiated issue, the role of technology, and the importance of collaborative global efforts.
Panelists agreed that the distribution of funds for climate change initiatives should be addressed at COP28. Ambassador Manjeev Puri highlighted the significance of addressing ‘Adaptation’ at COP28 and the role of intention in achieving climate goals.
The conversation also touched on the need for standardized taxonomies, rules, and regulations, as well as the role of wealth creation and urbanization in the fight against climate change. Additionally, there was a suggestion to incentivize adaptors rather than penalizing polluters in pursuit of a sustainable future.
The dialogue concluded with an information session on the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2024, discussing its objectives and potential contributions in the sustainability space.
