Week-long initiative combines cleaning drive with resident education on responsible waste management.
Students and faculty at Manthan School in Hyderabad recently completed a successful week-long project focused on cleaning Tellapur Lake and educating residents about responsible waste management practices. The initiative, which ran from March 11th to March 16th, embodied a commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
The project began with students conducting a survey to understand the waste disposal habits and challenges faced by residents living near the lake. This data-driven approach allowed them to identify areas requiring specific attention and tailor their intervention accordingly.
Armed with this knowledge, student and teacher volunteers embarked on a thorough cleaning drive around the lake’s perimeter. They removed garbage, litter, plastic waste, debris, and other pollutants that had accumulated over time.
Beyond the physical cleanup, the project aimed to educate residents about the long-term ramifications of improper waste disposal on the environment and local water bodies. Information sessions were held to promote responsible waste management practices, including the segregation of dry and wet waste.
To further empower the community, roughly 28 families residing near Tellapur Lake received a pair of dustbins – one designated for dry waste (marked with a blue sticker) and the other for wet waste (marked with a green sticker). Each household also received guidance on proper bin usage and placement.
The initiative proved successful in fostering community participation and raising awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources. Residents actively engaged with the project and expressed a commitment to maintaining cleanliness around the lake. The project also garnered the attention of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which dispatched workers to assist the students with the cleaning efforts.
“We are incredibly proud of our students and staff for taking the initiative on this important project,” said Mr. Surjeet Singh, Principal of Manthan School, Hyderabad. “At Manthan, we encourage our students to be aware of the challenges faced by our community and to develop solutions that can create positive change.”
The Tellapur Lake cleanup project serves as a commendable example of student-led environmental action. By combining hands-on restoration efforts with community education, the Manthan School initiative has made a significant contribution to the environmental well-being of Hyderabad.
