IRENA appointed as Custodian Agency to track progress towards tripling renewable energy and doubling energy efficiency targets by 2030.
In a landmark move, COP28 President Dr. Sultan Al Jaber has designated the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to spearhead a special annual report series aimed at tracking progress towards crucial energy objectives outlined in the UAE Consensus.
The Consensus, ratified by all 198 participating parties at COP28, underscores the urgent need to triple renewable power capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030. These ambitious targets align with global efforts to combat climate change and maintain the 1.5°C threshold.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber emphasized the significance of these objectives, stating, “Tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030 are central parts of the UAE Consensus.” He underscored the importance of translating agreements into actionable strategies to safeguard our climate future.
IRENA, recognized as the official Custodian Agency, will lead the development and publication of the annual tracking report from 2024 to 2030. Director-General Francesco La Camera affirmed IRENA’s dedication to realizing the UAE Consensus, highlighting the agency’s pivotal role in driving progress towards renewable energy adoption and enhanced energy efficiency.
