Amara Raja Invests Rs 9,500 Crore in Gigafactory, Partners with Piaggio

Leading battery manufacturer to establish itself as a major player in the Indian EV market.

Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited (ARE&M), a leading Indian battery manufacturer, has taken a significant step towards establishing itself as a major player in the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for its Customer Qualification Plant (CQP) and laid the foundation stone for its Gigafactory in Divitipally, Mahabubnagar district.

The Gigafactory, spread across 260 acres, will involve an investment of Rs 9,500 crore and is expected to be operational by 2031. It will produce advanced lithium-ion cells and battery packs for various EV applications, including two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The CQP, on the other hand, will focus on developing and testing custom cell chemistries for specific customer requirements.

ARE&M has already secured partnerships with major EV manufacturers like Piaggio Vehicles India and Ather Energy. The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Piaggio to develop and supply LFP lithium-ion cells and chargers for its EV three-wheelers and to collaborate on battery packs for its upcoming two-wheeler offerings.

Speaking at the event, Jayadev Galla, Chairman & Managing Director of ARE&M, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable job creation and India’s energy transition. He expressed gratitude to the Telangana government for its support in this venture. Vikramadithya Gourineni, Executive Director of ARE&M, highlighted the significance of the CQP in developing tailored cell chemistries for different customer needs.

With this strategic investment, Amara Raja aims to position itself as a major supplier of battery solutions for the growing EV market in India. The company’s focus on advanced technology and partnerships with leading EV manufacturers is expected to drive its growth and contribute to the country’s transition to electric mobility.
