IIT Roorkee Partners with Maithri Aquatech to Drive Research-Led Sustainable Water Solutions in India

IIT Roorkee and Maithri Aquatech have signed an MoU to collaborate on advancing Atmospheric Water Generation technology and sustainable water solutions, supporting India’s water resilience and climate action goals.

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), one of India’s leading centers for research and innovation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maithri Aquatech Pvt. Ltd., a pioneer in Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) technology, to drive research, innovation, and deployment of sustainable water solutions. The agreement was formalized in the presence of Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, underscoring the institute’s focus on research that addresses critical national challenges.

The collaboration aims to combine IIT Roorkee’s academic and scientific expertise with Maithri Aquatech’s advanced water technologies to enhance India’s water resilience. The partnership will focus on developing next-generation AWG systems optimized for diverse climatic conditions, integrating artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and predictive analytics to improve operational efficiency and water quality.

Under the agreement, both organizations will engage in joint research projects, pilot demonstrations, and technology development. The initiative will also promote knowledge exchange through internships, workshops, joint publications, and co-supervision of research. Pilot installations will explore hybrid solutions that combine AWG with nature-based water systems to create scalable, replicable models for real-world implementation.

Prof. K.K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, said, “This collaboration exemplifies IIT Roorkee’s commitment to transforming cutting-edge research into practical solutions for society. By combining our academic expertise with Maithri Aquatech’s technology, we aim to enhance water resilience and create scalable models that can benefit communities across India.”

Capt. K.K. Sharma, EVP, Maithri Aquatech, added, “Partnering with IIT Roorkee allows us to integrate our AWG technology with research-led insights, ensuring more efficient, sustainable, and socially impactful water solutions. Together, we can address the urgent water challenges facing India today and contribute to global sustainability goals.”

The MoU supports key national programs such as the National Water Mission and Jal Shakti Abhiyan, while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation; SDG 13: Climate Action). By leveraging innovation and technology, the collaboration seeks to improve access to clean drinking water in underserved regions, promote water conservation, and strengthen India’s climate resilience framework.

Prof. M.L. Kansal, WRDM Faculty and coordinator of the collaboration, stated, “This partnership bridges cutting-edge technology with academic research to provide sustainable water solutions for communities across India.”

With a shared commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, IIT Roorkee and Maithri Aquatech are set to pioneer research-led, impact-driven innovations that will play a vital role in ensuring water security for future generations.
