Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to install electric vehicle charging stations at metro stations for commuters to recharge their electric bikes and cars says a report.
A metro rail official speaking to TOI said that CMRL is in talks with Power Grid Corporation of India to set up electric vehicle charging stations.
According to the report initially the charging stations will be installed at stations in Tirumangalam, St Thomas Mount, Koyambedu and Alandur, which witness more footfall than other stations that are operational.
CMRL will install electric vehicle charging station at the parking lot of metro stations. A metro rail official speaking to the publication said “”Power Grid Corporation will install a standard charging port that could be used by all vehicles. They will use our space to set up the stations and also maintain it”.
Once the charging station is installed at least 10 electric bikes and five electric cars can be charged simultaneously.
The publication notes that CMRL is also in talks with companies to provide electric bikes on rent for last mile connectivity.
The electric bikes will be initially made available at stations that have high footfall and will be later extended to other stations.
