PGCIL Partners with Volks Energie to Revolutionize Energy Storage in India

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) collaborates with Volks Energie to upgrade its energy storage infrastructure with long-lasting and eco-friendly Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries, ensuring a more sustainable and reliable power grid.

In a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) has awarded a strategic energy storage project to Volks Energie, provider of solar energy, HVAC, and energy storage solutions.

This collaboration aims to transform India’s power infrastructure by transitioning from traditional VRLA/Lead Acid batteries to more durable and eco-friendly Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries.

A Leap Towards Sustainability

With over 600 substations across India, PGCIL plays a crucial role in power transmission. By integrating Ni-Cd battery technology, this initiative is set to enhance reliability, extend battery life by three times, and reduce hazardous waste. Unlike conventional lead-acid batteries, which typically last 5-7 years, Ni-Cd batteries can function for over 20 years, optimizing operational costs and minimizing environmental impact.

Why Ni-Cd Batteries?

  • Extended Lifespan: Lasting over 20 years, reducing the frequency of replacements.
  • Reliability in Harsh Conditions: Performs efficiently even in extreme climates, making them ideal for India’s diverse geography.
  • Prevention of Sudden Failure: Unlike VRLA batteries, Ni-Cd batteries eliminate the risk of sudden power loss, ensuring stable energy storage.
