Biogas Plants to Provide Clean Cooking Fuel, Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and Empower Women
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has set a target of establishing 15,205 biogas plants in India during the fiscal year 2023-24.
The plants will be set up under the Biogas Program Phase II, which is part of the National Bioenergy Program.
The biogas plants will provide clean cooking fuel, lighting, and meet users’ thermal and small power requirements. They will also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve sanitation, and empower women.
In addition, the biogas plants will produce organic-enriched bio-manure, which can be used as a fertilizer. This will help to reduce the reliance on chemical fertilizers.
The MNRE has urged all designated implementing agencies to take necessary measures to ensure the completion of the assigned objectives with high-quality construction, appropriate commissioning, and effective operation of biogas plants.
The Union government, earlier this month, launched the unified registration portal for GOBARdhan, intending to streamline the process of setting up compressed biogas CBG/Biogas plants in India.
The portal will act as a one-stop repository for assessing investment and participation in the sector nationwide.
