Union Minister of Power announces significant progress in renewable energy infrastructure
India has made significant strides in achieving its solar energy capacity targets. As of June 2023, the country has successfully installed 70.10 GW of solar power, nearing its goal of 100 GW by the year 2022. According to Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy, RK Singh, an additional 55.60 GW is currently under construction, demonstrating the government’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy infrastructure.
Speaking before the Lok Sabha, Minister RK Singh emphasized that while state-wise targets for renewable energy are not set, the government is actively engaged in collaborating with state governments and private industries to ensure the timely realization of the set target. Various schemes and policies are being implemented to facilitate the growth of solar energy capacity across the nation.
In response to concerns about solar panel waste, the minister assured that recycling and reuse of solar panels are viable options. Depending on the condition of the PV modules from a solar PV plant, they may be considered for recycling. The decision to reuse the recycled material is based on its economic value in comparison to virgin materials, as well as the purity and quality of the recycled components.
In terms of solar energy generation in 2022-23, India recorded an impressive 1,02,014.24 million units (MU) from solar-based sources out of the total power generation of 16,24,465.10 MU in the country, including power imports from Bhutan.
India’s progress in the solar energy sector showcases its commitment to sustainable and renewable energy sources, and the government’s efforts to boost solar power capacity are expected to contribute significantly to the nation’s energy needs in the future.
