Collaboration, Transparency, and Investment Seen as Key to Addressing Environmental Challenges
The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) hosted the Global Sustainability Conclave yesterday, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and environmental advocates to discuss collaborative solutions for a sustainable future.
The event, held at Hotel Le-Meridien in New Delhi, underscored the critical role of partnerships in addressing environmental challenges. Ramesh Kumar Kuruppath, Chief of Unit at the International Solar Alliance (ISA), emphasized the need for an “enabling ecosystem” to scale up solar energy adoption. Highlighting the importance of removing policy barriers and attracting private investment, Kuruppath stressed that “energy access, energy security, and energy transition” are the key pillars of a sustainable future.
The conclave also explored innovative approaches to sustainability within specific sectors. Keshav Singhal, Head of Sustainability for the Noida International Airport (NIA), outlined the project’s commitment to “minimal environmental impact” while offering a modern passenger experience. This “greenfield airport,” envisioned as a blend of “Swiss efficiency and Indian hospitality,” exemplifies how infrastructure development can prioritize sustainability.
Matthias Ong, Head of Disclosure and Environmental Data for CDP Asia Pacific, emphasized the power of transparency in driving environmental action. He highlighted the crucial role of environmental data disclosure in “scaling up sustainability efforts” and promoting responsible corporate practices.
Shivam Batham, Sr. AVP at Invest India, emphasized the growing investment opportunities in sustainable sectors such as renewable energy, waste management, and electric vehicles. He underscored the importance of “profitable incentives” and public-private partnerships (PPPs) in fostering collaboration and attracting investment.
Dr. Ranjeet Mehta, Executive Director of PHDCCI, noted the evolving understanding of sustainability. He pointed out that “sustainability is no longer a question of why, but when,” reflecting a growing global shift towards environmentally responsible practices. Dr. Mehta emphasized India’s potential to be a leader in sustainability, highlighting initiatives like the ISA and the PM’s LIFE mission, which focuses on transitioning to green energy.
The conclave featured additional presentations from Ms. Charlotte Morton, CEO of the World Biogas Association; Mr. M.K. Tiwari, Sustainability Head at GAIL India Limited; and Mr. Samit Mitra, Managing Director for GE Appliances India, among others. Their diverse perspectives enriched the dialogue on achieving a sustainable future through collaboration and innovation.
