Strategic collaboration aims to boost grid stability, renewable energy integration, and energy security through innovative battery storage solutions.
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited and a key player in India’s renewable sector, has partnered with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) to explore opportunities in the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) domain.
The two energy giants signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at India Energy Week 2025 in the presence of Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Hon’ble Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, along with top executives from ONGC and TPREL.
Driving India’s Clean Energy Transition
The collaboration aims to advance commercial prospects across various segments of the BESS value chain, including:
- Utility-scale energy storage solutions
- Grid stabilization and renewable energy integration
- Microgrids and hybrid energy systems
- Industrial and commercial energy storage
- Backup power and EV charging infrastructure
- Energy trading via ancillary services
Industry Speaks
Expressing his views on the MoU, Mr. Deepesh Nanda, CEO & Managing Director of TPREL, highlighted the critical role of BESS in strengthening grid reliability and facilitating India’s ambitious renewable energy transition. “This partnership with ONGC is a significant step towards developing innovative storage solutions that will enable a sustainable and resilient energy future,” he stated.
ONGC Chairman & CEO, Mr. Arun Kumar Singh, reiterated the company’s commitment to clean energy initiatives. “Energy storage is crucial for grid stability and renewable adoption. Our collaboration with Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited will help bolster India’s energy security while accelerating the country’s green transition,” he added.
A Milestone for India’s Renewable Sector
This strategic alliance underscores the shared commitment of TPREL and ONGC in building a robust energy ecosystem. TPREL’s expertise in large-scale battery storage solutions is evident from its recent achievement—the commissioning of India’s largest Solar and BESS project in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. The 100 MW Solar PV plant, integrated with a 120 MWh Utility-Scale BESS, sets a benchmark for future energy storage initiatives in the country.
As India moves towards a sustainable energy future, the partnership between Tata Power Renewable Energy and ONGC is expected to play a pivotal role in expanding the nation’s energy storage capabilities, ensuring greater renewable energy adoption, and enhancing long-term energy security.
