In a major step towards circular economy and sustainable energy transition, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture under the Ministry of Power, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) to establish a nationwide framework for the eco-friendly disposal and recycling of old electrical appliances.
This partnership aims to address a critical gap in India’s energy efficiency landscape—the safe and responsible disposal of inefficient electrical equipment such as motors, fans, air conditioners, and lights that are being replaced under EESL-led programs.
The MoU, effective for an initial period of 36 months, will enable industries, government agencies, and institutions to access a structured, compliant, and cost-effective recycling mechanism for outdated appliances.
Under the agreement, MRAI will leverage its extensive network of over 25,000 recyclers and associate members to ensure proper collection, dismantling, and environmentally safe recycling of old appliances.
EESL will integrate this mechanism into its energy efficiency initiatives, providing end-users with a seamless solution to dispose of replaced equipment in compliance with environmental and safety norms.
“This partnership marks a critical step in building a truly circular approach to energy efficiency,” said Shri Abhishek Gupta, Head (Appliances), EESL. “By aligning with MRAI’s recycling expertise, we are eliminating intermediaries, streamlining the disposal process, and ensuring greater value recovery while adhering to regulatory standards.”
Shri Amar Singh, Secretary General of MRAI, added, “Our collaboration with EESL reinforces our commitment to support India’s energy-efficient future through responsible recycling practices. Together, we are ensuring that old appliances are handled in a way that protects the environment and supports the circular economy.”
Echoing this sentiment, Shri Sanjay Dube, President of the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC), stated, “This MoU is a landmark step toward holistic energy efficiency. It integrates sustainability at every stage—from adoption to end-of-life disposal—offering both environmental and societal benefits.”
The EESL-MRAI partnership is expected to significantly reduce the circulation of outdated electrical systems, prevent informal and hazardous dismantling, and support India’s broader goals on climate action, waste reduction, and circularity.
By creating a responsible recycling ecosystem, the initiative sets a precedent for integrating environmental stewardship into the heart of energy efficiency programs.
