Osmania University is reportedly gearing up to tap solar power and generate 5 MW for its needs. According to TOI going solar will help the university save Rs. 90 lakhs a month on power bill.
Osmania University vice-chancellor Prof S Ramachandram speaking to the publication said that it would cost about Rs.5 crore to set up infrastructure for a solar power plant to generated one MW power. There is enough land on the campus and we will make use of it to set up the solar power plant.
To generate one MW power, about five acres of land would be needed says the report.
The publication notes that the university will make use of Rashtriya Uchchatar Siksha Abhiyan funds given by the Union HRD ministry under centrally-sponsored schemes to setup the solar power plant. It has also submitted the plan to the Centre for funding up to Rs.25 crore.
