Maharashtra Launches First Integrated City Cleaning & Waste-to-Energy Project in Kalyan-Dombivli

Sumeet Elko and KDMC join hands to transform urban sanitation with a decade-long, performance-driven waste management initiative covering over 600 tons of daily waste

In a major stride towards sustainable urban living, Sumeet Elko, a leading name in waste management solutions, has officially partnered with the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) to roll out Maharashtra’s first fully integrated city cleaning and waste-to-energy initiative. This landmark collaboration promises to redefine urban sanitation standards and enhance the quality of life for nearly half a million households.

The transformative project was inaugurated by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Sambhaji Shinde, alongside Dr. Shrikant Eknath Shinde, Member of Parliament for Kalyan, and senior KDMC officials. Unlike traditional waste management models, this project will operate on an “initial agreed quote” model rather than the typical tipping fee structure, ensuring better financial efficiency and increased transparency over the 10-year contract period.

Beginning today, May 19, 2025, Sumeet Elko will initiate a comprehensive cleaning operation under its ITAC (Initial Total Area Cleaning) model across all KDMC wards. This intensive first phase will run until May 25, after which the project will roll out in stages across the city.

The integrated system will manage over 600 tons of daily waste with the help of more than 350 high-tech vehicles, including low-emission battery-operated units, LMV tippers with segregated compartments, and hook loaders. The door-to-door waste collection effort will cover 4.5 lakh households and over 50,000 commercial establishments, supported by dedicated CSS teams and 200+ RC containers for slum and chawl areas.

As part of a performance-linked agreement, Sumeet Elko will be evaluated monthly on key metrics such as:

  • Timely waste collection (TAT compliance),
  • Real-time vehicle tracking and GPS-monitored route adherence,
  • Maintenance of clean, litter-free corridors, and
  • Rapid grievance redressal with a 2 to 48-hour resolution window.

Speaking on the occasion, Amit Salunke, CEO & Director of Sumeet Group Enterprises, stated, “We are proud to collaborate with KDMC on this visionary initiative. Our goal is not just to clean the city, but to build healthier, greener communities. This project marks a significant step toward that mission.”

Echoing the sentiment, Harshal Gaikwad, Additional Commissioner of KDMC, added, “This partnership is a leap forward in our commitment to a cleaner, waste-free Kalyan-Dombivli. With Sumeet Elko’s proven track record, we are confident this initiative will set a benchmark for urban sanitation across the state.”

The initiative will also deploy 226 manual street sweepers and create “Litter-Free Corridors” across key areas. Community engagement, awareness drives, and an efficient monitoring mechanism will further ensure the project’s long-term success and public involvement.

This collaboration between KDMC and Sumeet Elko is more than just a sanitation project—it’s a comprehensive urban renewal mission aimed at building a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable future for the citizens of Kalyan-Dombivli.
